Bieszczady Fauna

Bears, lynxes, and wolves are the first animals which come to mind when we think about Bieszczady. However, in our forests, it is more common to meet quietly grazing herds of roe deer or red deer.

The specific conditions of Bieszczady, high forestation and low population density are conducive for the existence of numerous animal species, such as: brown bear, lynx, wolf, deer of the Carpathian Mountains, bison, or wildcat. Brown bears especially fancy the area of Bieszczady, as their local population accounts for the most of Polish bears.

The sky above Bieszczady presents such beautiful species of birds as, among others, the golden eagle or the Eurasian eagle-owl. Bieszczady are also a habitat of rare species of amphibians, including fire salamanders and alpine newt. Reptiles in Bieszczady are represented, among others, by sand lizards, common European vipers, smooth snakes, and Aesculapian snakes. Finally, local insects include: lucanus cervus, rosalia longicorn, and carabus auronitens.
